Lee Yik Cham, University of Kent, United Kingdom

         20/01/2014

First day in United Kingdom. With a long-haul flight with delay, we have used nearly 24 hours from Hong Kong to Dubai, and then to London. University of Kent is in Canterbury, which is at the eastern side of London with approximately 2 hours’ drive. With blue sky and fresh air, I could say that is a very nice place to study. That day we gotta finish the paperwork of accommodation and student status registration. (That is quite boring.) This is a good chance to meet people from other places.

We are still in the buffer period, getting with the jet lag. UK is in time zone UTC 0, which is slower than Hong Kong for 8 hours in winter. We could wake up early this day, and then hang out within the university campus. We have gone the society member enrollment day, similar to CityU’s 木人巷 in student registration day. But ‘unfortunately’, we did not join any society as we just stay in UK for few months. We wish to make good use of time for travel. At night, there is a welcome dinner for all exchange students, which is a precious chance for us to meet others with GOOD food available. After the dinner, we have a birthday party for the roommate of our friends, just next to our house.

This day the University took us to Dover, which is a waterfront city and an important port to link UK with other European countries. However we did not visit those port facilities and city tourist spot. We have visited a castle with long history instead. Normally a spot under English Heritage requires a non-cheap admission fee but the university has sponsored us, meaning that we could gain a FREE admission! The most interesting thing for me is the UK’s flag with such beautiful scenery. University let us stay there for few hours. We could do what we want, and of course, try British food.

Here comes to the university campus again. This day is the first day we have our lecture here. Frankly speaking, facilities like lecture theatres in CityU are newer and more comfortable than those in University of Kent. However, that is the characteristics of European universities. Buildings are a little bit old. Okay, let us go back to lecture. Students here are more enthusiastic on their studies. They have more interaction with speaker, and they concentrate on their studies truly. Nearly everyone has his/her notebook in hand. We could see they have a very good attitude towards studies. That night over half of CityU buddies stay together for the dinner.

This is a free day for all of us. We decided to go to town of Canterbury and have a look. Here we could take a bus called UniBus which is exclusive for university students. As a student we could buy a Uniday onboard, which is a daypass for university students to get access to buses with Canterbury zone. It is 2.7 pounds, approximately HKD35. That day was in heavy rain. But that might be good for us because there are very few people on the street. We could have plenty of time to observe everything here. Canterbury is a typical UK town, with a lot of special buildings and cathedrals. Besides, there are supermarkets which are convenient for us to buy cheap food here rather than in school’s convenience shops.
