Tsang Ka Lam, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan

17/2/2014

Before I attended the lesson this semester, I rode my bicycle provided by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) to travel around the campus. This photo was taken at Cheng Kung Lake, where is the most beautiful site inside the main campus. After the short trip, the first challenge for me is the language. I need to practice my poor Mandarin to communicate with professors and classmates because English is not very common in Taiwan, not to mention Cantonese. The old professor sometimes switches his language to Taiwanese or Japanese because they lived in the Taiwan before Chinese National Party come.

I was still exploring the campus because I had no class today. I found a piece of wall and gate which looks like a part of ancient castle as you could see in the photo. According to my Taiwanese friend, Tainan was a capital of Taiwan island. Dutch, Chinese and Japanese also mainly developed this city until Chinese National Party coming to Taiwan. Today, I knew more about Taiwan’s history.

The photo was taken at my dorm while I was watching the grand view of Tainan city. Tainan’s skyscrapers are not as high as those in Hong Kong. Our dorm is the highest building but has only 12 floors. That’s why the sky view is very beautiful. My friend and I chose a café to spend our afternoon. Most of café in Tainan is opened in the old house. Their interior designs have their own styles and I felt warm when I was laying on tatami and drinking a cup of coffee.

When I was attending the Information Management course in NCKU, I noticed a dog is lying next to the table. I guessed it was due to its interest in IM. After this lesson, I knew that Taiwan’s IM course was different from HK’s. HK has less industry and focuses on Tertiary industry so my home university mainly teaches the financial part related IM courses. On the other hand, TW focuses on secondary industry such as electronic partials so the professor use Foxcon as examples to teach the producing process of a partial. When the class finished, the dog left too. But other classmates were not surprised to it and said “Hi Black-Girl!!”

The special bronze statue is called “Jump & Kick” setting up near to the college of Business. In this week, I passed by this statue by bicycle every day.   After arrival, the human resources management teacher started to talk about the labor law in TW and invited me to share some information about HK’s. It was very interesting to compare the two different countries’ institution and situation. And now I realized how Taiwanese see their own country. They normally felt depressed on TW’s economy because of the low economic growth and China’s competition.
