Cheung Sau Man @ EDHEC Business School – Lille Campus, France (From CityU) 4 January - 19 February 2010

4th Jan 2010

I just moved into the university residence. Luckily, I met one Romanian girl the day I arrived. She is PHD student in the Catholic University and studying the same subject as mine-International Business. I was so admired her that she could travel and study in different European cities and met a lot of people. Although she does not come from a rich family, she works very hard and thinks positive so that she received many scholarships and awards to support her persistent international exchange. Another girl was Canadian, we went out together to get used to the new environment and help each other to find the things that we need. We were so excited and looking forward to the brand new life.

New semester was started. The staff of the international relation in EDHEC prepared a welcome lunch for all international students. All of them were so nice, friendly and helpful. The coordinator prepared some French biscuits and cakes for us, and explained the origin of the desserts. I met two students from the Mainland China, and one Chinese from Thailand. I was so amazed that there were a lot of Chinese students studying oversea which made me feel the change and improvement of China, many cities have become open and modern. This day was a interesting day, I knew and learnt more about the change of different countries. I felt like I was becoming more and more “international”, I hope that I can keep in touch with all of them when I come back to Hong Kong.

Business students in France are so intelligent and aggressive. They work hard, and also play hard. They love to organize gathering parties for French and international students so that they can have cultural exchange and chance to practice English. The first and second things we learnt about French culture were wine and cheese. These two kinds of food are really special, they are “living”. Even though they are packed and ready for sale, they are still “growing” – their taste change along with the time. It was so nice that the committees found a lot of sponsors providing cheese, bread and different kinds of wine – red, white and pink.

This was the first trip I had in Europe. I went to Brussels with OPEN UP! by bus today. This was a totally new experience! I have never imagined that I took a bus to travel from country to country one day. I was so surprised and lucky to have the chance experiencing the western life style. We tried the best WAFFLE in the world and visited the bar selling thousands kinds of beer. I loved all the things I saw, all the places I visited, and all the people I met.

Another student of CityU , Elvy Lam, and I went to Bordeaux to visit one French classmate. All her family members were very nice and interested. Her daddy loved to cook Chinese cuisine, her mother loved to travel in Asian countries, her sisters were curious about the economy, the government and the companies of China and she wanted to visit Hong Kong one day. This night, we tried our best to cook a Chinese dinner for them. Although some of them were not so delicious, they enjoyed very much and we had a lot of fun. I appreciated the way how French people lived and thought, in fact similar to Chinese people but more open and simpler. I guess I will come back in the near future.
