Yip Chin Wai @ Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands (from CityU) 9 February - 30 April 2010

I have gone to a nice place today! Madurodam is a miniature city which shows nearly all famous and surprising features of Netherlands such as Alkmaar cheese market, the Peace Place of the Hauge and the Royal Place on the Amsterdam Dam Square. Everything is replicated to the smallest detail on a scale of 1:25. Although my exchange was not long enough to allow me to travel in every place in the Netherlands, at least I have not missed so many due to the visit to Madurodam. Really a nice place to enhance the understanding to the Netherlands!

I was invited to attend a formal welcome ceremony which was organized by my host university. During the ceremony, I have met different exchange students from all over the world! There was a great fun to chat and share own culture with students of different nationalities. Out of my expectation was that so many students have heard or even visited Hong Kong before. They were so interested about the special history and the traditional foods of Hong Kong.

After a two-months studying, my examination of Economics of Health and Health care came finally. Different from the arrangement in CityU, more than twenty subjects’ examinations were organized in the same time and venue here. It looked like a big event or celebration rather than an examination! Before the examination started, instead of reading the notes or discussing the topics, students were chatting and hanging around. They even brought drinks, sandwiches or fruits with them. Also, majority of local students left very early. A three-hour examination, most of the student chose to leave after an hour and a half!

Apart from the studying in the Netherlands, I also have visited other countries during my exchange. Today, I have been to the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp which was located 35km north of Berlin. Prisoners’ lived in a very harsh and terrible environment. Moreover, they had no idea about the day they can leave. Unending waiting was too cruel. This experience inspired me a lot. I believe it will give me courage when I face any difficulties in the future.

Queen’s Day, April 30, is one of the most important days in the Netherlands. It celebrates the birthday of the Queen of the Netherlands. Every Holland people went onto streets and celebrated it together! When I walked on the street in Amsterdam, everywhere was full of people. It even took me more than 30 minutes for 100 meters. Orange was the main theme in this day, so everyone has dressed in Orange. Sun-glasses, hat, T-shirt, everything was in orange. It is such a wonderful and memorable orange party!
