Tsang Hiu Wun, University of Bath, UK

3/2/2016 (Wednesday)
The new semester started this week and there is an event called a refresh week in the university. It aims to encourage students joining the clubs and societies. Today, Sports Refresh Fair is held on the parade outside the library. Hence, after finished all the administration works, I went there to see if I can join the table tennis club. Unfortunately, the table tennis club did not set up booth on that day and I was told to register online so as to become a member of the club. As I observed, how the students promoted their clubs is just like what students did in Hong Kong. They would wear the club shirts and tried to attract students in different ways. For example, they demonstrated how to play rugby and Judo in front of the booths. Therefore, it seems that the UK has a similar culture with Hong Kong in promoting the clubs and societies in the universities.

4/2/2016 (Thursday)
In Hong Kong, I seldom cook at home. However, to deal with the high price level in the UK and pursue the healthy lifestyle, I found it necessary to cook by myself. Obviously, it is difficult to get started.  Therefore, I cooked the dinner with my buddies from CityU and the exchange student from Korea together. The Korean brought her own sauces from Korea to cook and we cooked the Chinese food at the same time. We introduced the Chinese food to her while she did the same. In the end, we enjoyed the meal together. This experience not only let me learn how to cook, but also understand the food culture of other countries. Hence, I really look forward to cook with people from around the world in the future, so as to experience other food cultures as well as share the Chinese food culture to the world.

6/2/2016 (Saturday)
There is a free two course meal to welcome new International students to Bath in the church. We enjoyed a traditional British main meal followed by a selection of home-made desserts. This event aims at getting the British local students and exchange students together, to share their own cultures. During the meal, I met students from Sweden, Korea, China, Malaysia and Uruguay. We exchanged information about our backgrounds like the weather, educational systems and food in our home countries. This is my first time to chat with a number of people from around the world and this really helped me experience the cultural differences among different countries. After the meal, we played card games and table tennis together so I made some new international friends in this event. This is really a great opportunity for me to meet new people in a foreign country!

9/2/2016 (Tuesday)
I came to the UK under the impression that students are more actively participating in the lessons than students in Hong Kong. However, when I first attended the lessons in the university, I found that students seldom answered lecturers’ questions. This really gave me a shock! Yet, students started to answer questions actively this week. As we all know, this is not common in Hong Kong. Moreover, unlike students in Hong Kong, students in the UK are very quiet during the lessons. I appreciate this learning culture a lot! Besides, it is usual that students here take one year gap year to do placement in the company which is again, not common in Hong Kong. For instance, I took an investment banking course and it is obvious that students who had done a placement in investment banks before know a lot about the industry. As above, the academic system in the UK is somehow different from that of in Hong Kong.

19/2/2016 (Friday)
During my exchange in the UK, I want to meet new people both by attending the classes and joining societies or sports clubs in the university. As I love sports, I decided to join the table tennis club. They run four sessions a week and Friday sessions are usually the most social with the most people attending. Therefore, I had a taster session after today lesson. During the session, I kept on taking turn to play table tennis with people that have different cultural and academic backgrounds. I even met Hong Kong people who are the full-time students here. As they told me, the overall level of table tennis is not that high in the UK as well as not many girls like playing table tennis.  So they really want me to be the representative in the coming competition. Unfortunately, I am not free on the day of competition, but I really hope that I can take the opportunity next time!
