Monday, 20 October 2008

Today, I skipped the morning class for finalizing the group report due at midday. “Luckily”, we eventually submitted it on time :)

After submission, I had lunch with my international friends in the sole pub which locates on campus. PUB? Are you serious? This is my first response when I was noticed there is a pub on campus. It actually runs like a restaurant in the afternoons and then turns to pub in the evenings, serving alcohols and having some performances someday. This explains how the people in Halifax fancy to the alcohols are.

After finishing the lunch with my lovely friends, I had a macroeconomics’ mid-term test. It was not that hard; the questions covered were almost the same as the practice questions. So everyone just took only half of the time to finish it.

In the evening, I joined the Mini International Night. Throughout the party, we had a chance to enjoy the Flamingo performance, Japanese folk songs and Indian dance... of course, we had drinks as well. It is the main reason for each gathering and meeting at here~

Tuesday, 21 October 2008

Every Tuesday and Thursday, I ended my classes by 11:15am , so I would have a free afternoon. Today, I decided to show the “traditional food” to my flat mate, a Canadian woman. Can you guess which kinds of food I wanna show her? Yup, it is “barbecue pork”. You may wonder where I find the BBQ pork. Yes. I baked it. From flavor to cook, all done by myself. Following the guidelines of the recipe searched on the Internet, I found it is not as hard as we imagine. You can make one to your foreign friend if you interested in. I think they must love it as well!

Wednesday, 22 October 2008

To celebrate the birthday of my international friend, we went to “Father’s mustache” tonight. This is a restaurant famous for chicken wings and beer. Even though we were there very early (around 5:00p.m., far before the peak hour), we still need to wait for a couple of minutes as the chicken wings would be served as 50% off on Wednesdays; everyone would like to go especially.

When we had a seat, we can’t wait to order beers and two 50 chicken wings with “suicide”, “honey garlic” and “barbecue” sauces. As their names, suicide sauce is super super super spicy, but we love it very much!

Right after the meal, we went to the closest hill to observe the star. Because the clear sky and none of the high buildings, the view was awesome…a lot of stars twinkle in the sky…really wanna sing “Twinkle, twinkle little stars, how I wonder what you are..” Crazy…I think I was drunk~

Study Day –I am preparing for the mid-term holds tomorrow. In the evening, my flat mate made a traditional Japanese food –“Okonomiyaki” for me. Although she is Canadian, but not Japanese, she learnt it from her ex-roommate. The most important point is it tastes really good, like the one we have outside! She also goods at homemaking various kinds of dips, so I picked up a nickname for her, “Queen of Dips”. And we are kidding I would find her on the newspaper under a topic with regard to A Canadian Woman Develops a Global Market for Homemaking Dip” one day. If it happens, it should be really funny!

Friday, 24 October 2008

Having my major course’s mid-term in the afternoon, so I keep studying hard on it until the time to go to school. Gosh… out of the two short questions, I can’t even find one part that I exactly know the answer with. :(

To get rid of the “painful experience” of mid-term, my friend invited me to enjoy the football game (Attack Rugby) with her. In fact, it is my second time to go. Maybe I am not familiar in the rules and I’m still worry about my test, I can’t enjoy the game so much. But it was a funny sport definitely!*I think I properly need to rearrange my time for fun and study, try to get a balance between them, so I can enjoy life and also gain a high marks in the academic aspects.

I was just back from Niagara Falls today. It is one of the most magnificent places I’ve ever been! I is astonished by nature’s supremacy. I believe that anyone who goes there will realize that they should admire the Almighty. Niagara Falls will definitely be at the top of my recommendation list of must-go places to every exchange student coming to the United States.

Today is the last day of October Break which means that I can enjoy another day-off! One of my roommates went to New York City in the break and the other went to Chapel Hill, NC. But a day-off doesn’t mean a party day here.

I am going to have a presentation tomorrow for my communication course. (Actually it’s a pure speech course which we are required to do three presentations in the class and one in the community) I have to spend half day preparing for it. The topic is about China’s one-child policy. Americans are so interested in the topic that I’ve at least been asked for more than ten times about the policy. So I decided to give my class a presentation and try to objectively describe and evaluate the policy. (I can also use myself as an example~)

Attached is a photo of my apartment. It’s nice, right?

Wednesday, 15 October 2008
My presentation today was quite good, I think. Anyway, I tried my best and got all of my classmates involved. I received a birthday card from the University today! At first I thought it was to congratulate my 21st birthday (which means I am a “legal” person here, i.e. to drink or to go to pubs). But after I read the card, I realized it was not like that at all! Hah, here is what it says: If you choose to drink… Celebrate with friends you trust. Ensure that you have a sober driver Be smart, 21 shots is a bad idea…(and more) Wow, what a kind reminder!

Thursday, 16 October 2008

Heavy rain last night. When I got up today, I was surprised at what I saw. Just look at the picture, what sharp contrast!

The environment is really beautiful right?

Friday, 17 October 2008

Finally it comes to my birthday!!! I got so many congratulations today (21st is the most important birthday here).

My host family, the Truebloods who have 11 kids (Oh my GOSH!) invited me to their home to celebrate. We went to a high school football game first and had a really BIG dinner. Ms. Trueblood is a good cook, and she baked a birthday cake for me! This was the best night I have had in the United States.

The Truebloods are so nice and they invited me to many fun events, like deer hunting (WOW!), hiking, Christmas dinner… They will be the most important part of my memory in the States!

Xu Shen @ University of Stirling, UK (from CityU) 6 - 10 October 2008

Monday, 6 October 2008

Today was the beginning of my 4th week in University of Stirling. Frankly speaking, life in Stirling is easy. I have only 3 modules, each module only have 3 one-hour lectures and a one-hour seminar per week.

I’ve got 3 lectures on Monday, and I missed one of them today…it was difficult to get up in the early morning…so I didn’t attend the Marketing Research class and got up in the mid-morning.

I went out to a bar tonight with several friends and we had a wonderful time. Experiencing the “bar culture” in Scotland is something I don’t want to miss. I tried many of the famous local drinks all these days, like whisky (which Scotland is famous for), and Guinness (famous for its dark beer and the world’s record).

Tusday, 7 October 2008

I’ve got a day-off on Tuesday, and I went to Edinburgh with my friends. Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and is quite near to Stirling. Together with Glasgow, the largest city of Scotland, the three cities seem like three vertexes of a triangle on the map.

It took us roughly an hour to get there by train and this was my second time visiting the city. We visited the National Museum of Scotland and Royal Museum of Scotland in the morning. I found the exhibits on display very interesting, as they demonstrated a unique culture and an interesting stretch history.

After lunch, we went to climb a hill which I couldn’t remember its name now… When we finally standing on the top of the mountain, I could see the entire city of Edinburgh – an old city (many castles and venerable buildings) with modern atmosphere (fashion people and feelings of art), I love this city…

I love Stirling too~~ it’s a place of landscape. Also, it is the place of the story in the movie Brave Heart. Tomorrow I will go to the Stirling Castle~~It will be another wonderful day~

Wednesday, 8 October 2008

I went to the Stirling Castle this afternoon together with several new friends. We set off after attending lectures in the morning and having lunch.

Stirling Castle used to be the palace of Scotland, and the story in the movie Brave Heart was actually happened here. I haven’t watched the film~~so I have no idea about what it talks about~~

I’ve got headache today – perhaps owing to the rain in the morning. Therefore I was depressed this afternoon and didn’t pay much attention to the scenery and the castle…anyway, it’s a place that worth visiting .p.s. the ice cream I bought outside the castle taste good.

Thursday, 9 October 2008

Today was a peaceful day…nothing special…attending lectures and seminar, discussing IE (International and Export Marketing) group project with my group mates (the only project I have for this semester), surfing on the Internet, and feeling a little bit tired because of the travels in the two successive days.

Today is a rainy day, as usual. But I love this kind of rain – quite, light, no need for an umbrella. Go out, walking in the rain and on the wet grass – nothing special but a pleasing feeling.

Friday, 10 October 2008

Finally, this week comes to an end, and so does this task~~I like it, as I recorded my memory and shared my life with all of you by displaying several snapshots in my exchange.

Today I attended a seminar – it is the same thing known as “tutorial” in CityU – and made a new friend from Brunei. I was confused when she told me her nationality…I didn’t know which this country was. But fortunately, she could speak Chinese, she told me the Chinese version of the country name and I figured out which the country was.

Do you know where Brunei is? Just Google it!

Qin Xuelu @ California State University, Long Beach, USA (from CityU) 29 September - 3 October 2008

Monday, 29 September 2008

A tough week begins! It’s already Week 5 and my first Mid-term exam will be held on tomorrow. But I have only two classes today, one from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm and another from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm. So I can spend several hours in the library reading my Principles of Marketing and preparing for tonight’s Management class.

When everything seems going smooth, unfortunate thing happens. At 6:45 pm, when I walk into the lecture theater, I find my name plate placed on the second row. This means I am chosen to answer the instructor’s questions and would be rewarded by participation points today. Participation counts half of the total points and are all judged by how well you answer the questions of the instructor when he picks you. All questions are related to management in US companies and are all real life examples chosen by him. Luckily, I did some revisions and spent my weekend doing the Google case study he told us to do, so I am able to manage his two questions. Anyway, I've survived from the class today and as usual, I learn a lot about business in USA.

Tuesday, 30 September 2008

This morning is quite interesting. Oly and Apollo, the two big dogs in my host family, shove my bedroom door open and get in my room when I am still sleeping. Oly jumps onto my bed and licks my toes while Apollo sits beside my bed looking at me. I guess it is around 7:00am since Libby, my landlady and Cecilia, another tenant, are about to leave the house. Two dogs look at me as if to ask: Libby and Cecilia are leaving, why don’t you get up? But I stayed up too late last night trying to finish reading the Marketing textbook and I am still unconscious; I have to ask them to leave. Oh, the lovely dogs!I have three classes today and one exam in the evening. So today is really stressful. Whenever I have time, I will take out Principles of Marketing and read a few lines. Luckily, there are 50 MC questions and takes 50 minutes. Then our group holds a meeting for the project. We divide our tasks and the guys share their experience of driving the Lamborghini car since our topic is the marketing strategy of this luxury car company. Everyone is very excited about it.

Wednesday, 1 October 2008

Exams come one by one, another one comes tomorrow. What a busy week! Then, today my main task is to read my Law book. So I go home early after class and cook the rice in the microwave oven and mix it with sausage and kimchi— that becomes my dinners for the next two days. After my “dinner”, I have to go back to the book. It is the most confusing book I have ever read, the sentence structures are so complicated that I need to read them again and again. Though not much to read compared with Tuesday’s Marketing, but remember the difference between liability and property and which one is more efficient under which conditions is quite challenge. Due to the revision, I cannot go swimming with Libby today, what a pity!

Thursday, 2 October 2008

I wake up quite early today at 5:50am, still worry about the exam. I still not yet finished the last chapter. So I need to make use of the last 4 hours to prepare for it. Oly comes in, jumps onto my bed and lies next to me quietly. I read through the night until the sun comes out. At 8:30am, I go to school in California’s beautiful sunshine. Today is a bit hotter than the usual cool weather here, although I just hear from my classmate in Michigan that they have only 8 degrees. But it is still cold inside the buildings.

Now the Law exam is over but there is still another one coming next Tuesday. In addition to Monday’s Management class, God knows whether I will be chosen again. So I cannot relax and lie on the oily green grass, I still have work to do on weekends. But I will go to Chinatown in LA this Saturday with my friends from the Study Abroad Club, so Saturday will be the real exchange life—each week, you can go to a party or visit another place.

Friday, 3 October 2008

Today is my day-off but it is the cleaning day of my house. So I stay at home. I begin to clean my room in the morning. Since the dogs like to visit my room, there is dog hair everywhere, so I get the cleaner to clean the wood floor. Then it is the shared bathroom. Since Cecilia cleaned bathroom last week,so it's my turn now. When I go to the closet to search for cleanser, I am surprised by how many kinds of cleanser an American family has; there are cleansers for wood, glass, kitchen and car etc. I have to read the labels one by one but finally I find it in a corner. When I was in Hong Kong, I only used the water to clean my tiny residence. Americans love their big homes! After cleaning the bathroom and admiring my “great job” (I imagine the bathtub and floor are shinning), I think I should keep cleaning up my residence every week after going back.

Gordon Chan @ HEC Montreal, Canada (from CityU) 22 - 26 September 2008

Monday, 22 September 2008

Hi, I’m Gordon, this is my first dairy for the exchange program. Today is already one month after our arrival. The new term has started 3 weeks, and my exchange fellows and myself settled quite well, we have met many new friends through those orientation programs and classes.

All of us are assigned to live in the dormitory of HEC Montreal, which is our host university. Our room is big, comparing with our CityU dorm, also, it is a single room, I am quite satisfied with the dorm.

Coincidently, I have bought a new cooker today, and i have made my first wrap for my dinner. I made the food by following the recipe of “SUBWAY”, which is a very famous chain food store in North America, and i thought it was very tasty.

Tomorrow I am going to meet and have lunchour buddy in HEC Montreal, i am looking forward to it.

Tuesday, 23 September 2008

We have followed our schedule today, having lunch with our buddy-Coco. Unfortunately, Cludia and Kathy, who are my fellows from CityU, had class during the lunch time, so they could come and join us.

Meanwhile, I have to mention something special about our buddy, since she is a Hong Kong citizen, and able to speak Cantonese as well, she helps a lot when we first arrived in Montreal.

For the lunch, actually they don’t call it a “lunch”, and they use a word “brunch”instead. According to my buddy's explain, brunch means breakfast and lunch, and she said it is quite common in western culture to have a brunch. Before the brunch, I got a great expectation for this meal; however, actually it was simply just a big breakfast, which was big enough to be a lunch. So the “brunch” is nothing special at all. Since it is week 4 already, different kind of assignments is beginning, and I had my first group meeting today with my news groupmates.

Wednesday, 24 September 2008

Today is the most busy day for me, as I have 2 classes to attend. It is different from CityU, in HEC Montreal, we won’t separate our course into one lecture and one tutorial session. Instead of it, we have a 3-hour lecture, so it is quite harsh.

After all the classes, I joined a orientation program tonight, which call “cocktail night”. We had gone to several clubs to try different kind of alcoholic drinks. At the beginning, I was afraid I could get drunk easily; but afterward, I proved that I could drink a lot! Besides of drinking, we also played those “club game” with the rest of the exchange students, we shared a lot of games between each other.

Tonight was fun, and I had met many new friends today; but I thought that because of the alcohol, I already felt very sleepy now, so that’s all for today.

Thursday, 25 September 2008

After a wild night, my fellows told me that our free pass for some of the prestigious institutions had been activated today, so we decided to go to some museums that we are interested in. Finally, we decided to go to a biosphere museum.

There is so much fun, since this museum is different from a normal one, most of the creatures we have seen is not living in a cage. We could touch and feel it, it helps to understand them. There are three parts in this museum, the first part is about the tropical forest, the second part is about oceans, and the last part is about the South Pole. There are different kind of creatures we have seen today, for example, different kinds of ducks, bats, frogs, and the most cute one, penguin.
Also, since the museum is located next to the former Olympic stadium, we could visit it too. However, Olympic game was held in 1976 in Montreal, so it was 30 years ago and the stadium is a bit old already. I could just said that it still has it features. Then, we had our dinner for finishing our trip.

Friday, 26 September 2008

Today is the last day for me to write this dairy, time passes fast. As I have mentioned yesterday, since our free pass has been activated, and this period is just going to last for a week only, so we have decided to utilize it. And, today we used it again, we had gone to a garden with an insect museum. This garden is so big, I don’t think we could walk through of the themes in a day, so we have just chosen two main themes to take a look.

First of all, we went to the insect museum. I don’t want to mention it so much, since it is quite disgusting. Then we went to the Japan theme garden, and this is fantastic. No matter which angle for us to look at it, it is just beautiful. There is a small waterfall in it, and a river and some Japanese houses in it, make the whole garden full of Japan’s tincture. And then we go to the China Garden. Since it is quite near to our mid-autumn festival, so they are holding a lantern exhibition here. It is quite fancy about their lanterns. But it is still ok.
